Chile de Onza

$ 4.40

Description:  I am not sure what these are supposed to be.  I expected a habanero type, but got these.  They are pretty big mild pods that ripen to a dark chocolate all the way through.  Descriptions on searches are all over the place.  Some say small, some big, some are thin walled, these were pretty thick walled.   What I will say is they were pretty productive and very nice tasting mild pods.  Below is what AI tells me to sum it up.

The Chile de Onza pepper is a relatively rare and exotic variety of chili pepper, known for its unique appearance and flavor profile. Here are some key details about it:

  • Appearance: This pepper is small to medium in size and typically has a conical shape. It often exhibits a vibrant red color when mature, though it can also be found in other colors like green when less mature.

  • Flavor: The Chile de Onza is known for its rich, smoky flavor with a moderate level of heat. It's not the spiciest pepper out there, but it certainly has a kick.

  • Usage: It's commonly used in traditional Mexican cuisine, particularly in sauces and marinades where its smoky flavor can shine. It's also popular in salsas and can be dried and ground into a powder for seasoning.

It's not as commonly found as some other types of chili peppers, which makes it a bit of a specialty item in many markets. Have you tried it before?
